Whitwell & Hodthorpe World War One Commemoration

To commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War, Whitwell Parish Council put together the project titled ‘Whitwell & Hodthorpe World War One Commemoration’ and received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to organise some events with local people. The project focuses on remembering local heroes and exploring the heritage of those bygone times, with events taking place between June and August 2018. For a particular village celebration in the garden of the Rectory in Whitwell, Hog Roast Whitwell was asked to provide our delicious hog roast rolls.

The event was arranged by Rev. Liz Kirby, who is ‘Priest in Charge’ of Elmton with Creswell and Whitwell with Steetly, as well as being Chaplain to Derbyshire - pig8Landmarks College. Liz asked us to roast a hog in order to feed 150 guests, so our team at Hog Roast Whitwell arrived bright and early on the day of the event in order to prepare, cook and then serve our yummy pigs in buns. When we’re cooking a hog for a party, it’s a long and slow process, to ensure the meat is cooked all the way through thoroughly and the skin doesn’t burn. The result is tender and juicy insides and a salty, crunchy outside, as the skin turns into crispy crackling, which we make by smothering the meat with salt before cooking, while we also add water pre-roast to make sure the pig stays moist.

While a hog roast is our speciality, and something that we’ve done for many years, we can also provide additional or alternative options for your special occasion. Whether you’re planning a birthday party, wedding feast, school fete or corporate event, or anything else you can think of, Hog Roast Whitwell can cook the food that you want to be served. We can provide a hog or spit roast, cook a barbecue, supply several sit-down courses or make sure any guests with dietary requirements are catered for. From vegetarians to vegans to gluten-free guests (or those with different needs), our homemade options will delight and satisfy.

On this special day, we served up plenty of pigs in buns to lots of hungry guests in some lovely surroundings and the plates all came back empty.
